How To Screenshot
How to take screenshots on Windows?
1.The Quickest Keyboard Shortcuts.
· PrtScn (Print Screen)
Captures your entire screen (or all screens, if you have multiple monitors) and copies it to the clipboard. You then need to paste it into a program like Paint, Word, or an email using Ctrl + V and save it manually.
· Alt + PrtScn
Captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. Paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V.
· Win + PrtScn
Captures the whole screen and automatically saves the image as a PNG file. Your screen will dim briefly, and the file is stored in Pictures > Screenshots.
· Win + Shift + S
Opens the small Snipping Tool bar at the top of the screen. You can choose a rectangular, free‑form, window, or full‑screen snip. The captured area is copied to the clipboard. A notification will appear; clicking it opens the image in the Snipping Tool where you can annotate, crop, and save it.
2. Using the Built‑in Snipping Tool (Windows 11) / Snip & Sketch (Windows 10).
Search for Snipping Tool (or Snip & Sketch on Windows 10) in the Start menu. This tool gives you more control:
· Different capture modes – rectangular, free‑form, a specific window, or the full screen.
· Delay timer – set a delay of 3, 5, or 10 seconds before the capture. This is perfect for capturing dropdown menus or tooltips that disappear when you press a key.
· Basic editing – after taking a snip, the tool opens an editor where you can draw, highlight, crop, and add shapes.
3. Special Situations.
· Laptops – On many laptops, the PrtScn key is shared with another function. You may need to press Fn + PrtScn (or Fn + Win + PrtScn) for the shortcuts to work.
· Game Bar (Win + G) – Designed for capturing gameplay, but works for most apps. It can take screenshots and record video clips.
· Capturing a scrolling webpage – Use a browser extension like “GoFullPage” for Chrome or the built‑in Web Capture feature in Microsoft Edge (Ctrl + Shift + S).
Pro Tips
Save as PNG for the highest quality, especially if the image contains text or sharp graphics. Use JPG for photographs when file size matters.
If the Print Screen key doesn’t seem to do anything, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on “Use the Print Screen key to open screen snipping”. This makes PrtScn launch the Snipping Tool directly.
